Measuring your progress

You fixed the file, published the pages, started the link habits. This chapter is how to watch it pay — with your own eyes, on the same rulers the report used.

The honest timeline

  • Same week: the fixes exist. Your pages carry the corrected titles and descriptions the moment you save them. Nothing more visible happens yet, and that is normal.
  • Two to six weeks: search engines re-read your pages on their own schedule and update their index. Results-page snippets start showing your new lines; positions begin to move on the phrases you targeted.
  • Months: the winnable pages settle into their positions; links accumulate; the compounding starts. Search is a slow flywheel — the work you did keeps paying without being redone.

Watch it with the engine’s own (free) window

Google’s Search Console is a free service where Google shows you, from its own records: which searches you appeared for, your average position on each, and how many people clicked. Setting it up is one afternoon task — verify you own the site, then wait a few days for data. The three numbers to watch monthly:

  1. Impressions — how often you appeared in results at all. This is visibility, and it moves first.
  2. Average position on the phrases you targeted. Watch the specific winnable phrases from your report, not the average of everything.
  3. Clicks — the number that becomes customers. It follows the first two.

Re-audit — the same ruler, later

The cleanest measurement is the one you started with: run the audit again after the engines have had time to re-read you (a month is the sensible interval — measuring sooner mostly measures their crawl schedule, not your work). Same ruler, same site, two dates: the difference is your progress, in numbers nobody estimated.

The maintenance habit — fifteen minutes a month

  • New page published? Give it a real title and description the day it goes up — you know how now.
  • Deleted or renamed a page? Set the redirect the same day.
  • Check Search Console once a month; look at your target phrases.
  • Once a quarter, click through your own site like a stranger: anything broken, slow, or embarrassing gets the same treatment as the original fixes file.

That is the whole discipline. The lodge sent you up the mountain with everything you need — this page is the map you keep in your pocket.
